Introduction

 Challenge

Our client required the production of a custom Grade 5 titanium alloy long shaft part with the following specifications:

- Hole depth: 260mm

- Surface roughness: Ra1.6

- Internal diameter tolerance: +0.5mm

 

Titanium alloy is widely used in aerospace and medical devices due to its high strength and low density. However, these properties also make it difficult to machine. Initial tests using conventional drill bits resulted in a drilling time of 15 minutes per hole, which was unacceptable for large-scale production.

 

 

 Solution

Recognizing this issue, we immediately decided to develop a custom drill bit specifically designed for deep hole drilling in high-strength materials. We collaborated with a specialized drill bit manufacturer to design and test various solutions to ensure the final custom drill bit could meet the client’s requirements while significantly improving efficiency.

 

 

 Implementation

We integrated the custom drill bit into our production process and provided specialized training for our operators to ensure they could effectively use the new tool. We conducted multiple tests and adjustments to maintain consistent high quality during the machining process.

 

 

 Results

By using the custom drill bit, we successfully reduced the drilling time per hole from 15 minutes to 5 minutes, saving 10 minutes of machining time per hole. This improvement not only significantly enhanced production efficiency but also ensured that the surface roughness and internal diameter tolerance of the parts met the client's stringent requirements.
