CNC milling and CNC turning use different cutting methods and are suitable for different part geometries.
CNC turning is primarily used for rotational components such as shafts, pins, bushings, threaded components and cylindrical housings. The workpiece rotates while cutting tools remove material.
CNC milling is generally used for prismatic or irregularly shaped components. The cutting tool rotates and moves along multiple axes to create pockets, slots, holes, contours and other features.
Some components require both turning and milling operations. For these parts, mill-turn or combined machining can reduce the number of setups and improve positional accuracy between features.
The most appropriate process depends on the geometry, tolerances, quantity and material of the component.
